Tropical Cyclone Matmo Struck Coastal China Bringing Widespread Evacuations
The powerful storm struck the coast on the southern shores of China on the weekend, shortly after passage over the provincial island of Hainan. The severe weather forced the relocation of approximately 350,000 residents, delivering torrential rain and damaging winds, particularly between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were suspended and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.
Typhoon Statistics
The typhoon, this year's 21st typhoon of the year, recorded wind speeds of 151km/h and poured more than 50mm of rainfall in six hours in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of the region also received significant rain amounts.
The storm triggered China's highest-level emergency warning, with disturbances in Zhanjiang, where businesses, transportation systems and highways were closed. In Hong Kong, numerous air services were impacted and dozens called off.
Future Projections
As the typhoon moves inland towards the provincial area in Vietnam, it is expected to diminish into a tropical depression with 89km/h winds but will continue to bring heavy rainfall. Northern Vietnam could experience 130-150mm on Monday, raising the threat of flooding and mudslides. The system is anticipated to move towards Yunnan province in China, where additional heavy rainfall is likely.
Other Storm Systems
At the same time, a hurricane named Priscilla formed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on Saturday night, initially as a storm system. It led to a storm watch for the southwestern areas from a coastal point to another location on the start of the week.
In the early hours of Sunday, the hurricane was about 305 miles from Cabo Corrientes with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It intensified into a hurricane in the evening, when wind speeds reached at 121km/h.
Although unlikely to hit the coast, Priscilla is expected to produce hazardous swells and strong currents as it moves northwestward along the coast towards a Mexican state. Heavy rainfall is forecast on Monday, amounting to a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Other regions could receive moderate to heavy rain.
Elsewhere, a cyclone named Shakhti has developed as the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm of 2025 in the a body of water, prompting an warning from the India Meteorological Department for an Indian state. On that day, Shakhti was 209 kilometers southeast of a location in Oman with peak wind speeds of 64mph.
The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is predicted to turn towards the east into the Arabian Sea. Turbulent waters are expected to persist along the Gujarat-North Maharashtra coast and intense rain is anticipated in coastal districts including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
